Beginning
in the fall at Arlington Heights United
Methodist Church, Disciple Bible Study offers a comprehensive, structured, in-depth study of the Bible. It is designed to foster spiritual growth and more intentional discipleship. The classes meet weekly in a small group setting. Daily Bible reading and homework are an important part of the course. Each class meets for approximately 32-34 weeks.
The first level of study is Disciple I, Becoming Disciples Through Bible
Study. This is a thought-provoking general survey of both the Old and New Testaments. It features small group discussion of Scripture based on careful study and preparation. It is aimed at transformation, not just information. This is a
prerequisite to all other studies in the Disciple program.
Disciple II,
Into the Word, Into the World, is an intensive study of Genesis, Exodus, Luke and Acts. It teaches the basic study skills of going deeper into Scripture, linking Bible study to witness and service in the world. The study emphasizes the rhythm of coming to God and going for God, of being in the Word and in the world individually and corporately. It calls for evaluating and reordering life’s priorities in response to God’s call.
Disciple III,
Remember Who You
Are, is an intensive study of the prophets and Paul’s letters in their biblical, historical, and geographical context. It includes the same thought provoking questions for the individual and for the group as Disciple I and II. The course understands Bible Study as a call that will result in a serving community nourished by Scripture.
Disciple IV,
Under the Tree of Life, is a study of the Writings (Old Testament Books not in the Torah or Prophets) and the Gospel of John and Revelation in the New Testament. It addresses both the community and individual life of the believer appealing to the senses and emotions. It taps into the power of Psalms with a psalm of the week. It calls disciples to serious in-depth Bible study that will result in the development of biblically nourished servant leaders. Christian
Believer
is a 30-week course that integrates Bible study and the classic and historic doctrines of the Christian faith.
Each participant uses a reading package that consists of a study manual and a book of readings from the great writers, ancient and modern, on the core beliefs of the Christian faith.
"Christian Believer" demands discipline and commitment to attend a two hour class once a week and to
prepare daily.
